Writing Samples: "A Pattern for
Innocence"
We, the more common ones of
our kind,
'oft look at a face and see difference of mind.
We assume there's some difference on their part,
and rightly so, though it lies in the heart.
With their countenance "odd," they are like a clone,
so much as each other, they are not alone.
So who is to say is it "us" or 'haps "they,"
who fit God's plan for an innocent way?
For with hearts filled with joy and spirits so pure,
if we were like them, we might man's troubles cure.
They do not live with minds which deceive,
but sincerely say, "Thanks," for the help they receive.
We, they more common, see them and give pause,
but we should see samples of God's holy cause.
We're to "love one another," in the gospel it's said,
so are we more 'live or are we the more dead?
Let's learn from these special ones ways we should live,
who though they receive, still so much more give.
With no guile in heart, whose souls shall not burn,
they are patterns for innocence, from whom we should learn.
Oh, blessed with Downs, how you've inspired me,
may God continue his watch over thee.
